The map

Lier lies in the province of Antwerp, where the Grote Nete and Kleine Nete rivers meet. Its historic centre is enclosed by a ring of former ramparts, now a green belt and a line of roads and water. Inside the ring, the streets converge on the Grote Markt and its belfry, part of a UNESCO listing of Belgian belfries.
