Dense old town
Brick houses built wall to wall form a compact, intricate pattern of lanes. This is the most detailed part of the map and the heart of Thimi's traditional life.

The map
Madhyapur Thimi Map Poster & Print
Madhyapur Thimi sits in the middle of the Kathmandu Valley, as its name suggests, between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. The old town stands on a slightly raised terrace above the surrounding fields. From above it is a compact, elongated cluster of closely packed buildings, threaded by narrow lanes that open onto small squares. Newer development spreads along the Araniko Highway, which runs along the edge of the historic core.
Thimi is a traditional Newar settlement known for its pottery and papier-mâché masks, crafts that are still practised in its courtyards. It is also known for Sindoor Jatra, held at the Nepali New Year, when palanquins of local deities are carried through the streets and participants are covered in vermilion powder. The town's courtyards, temple squares and lanes grew up around these communal traditions.
A Madhyapur Thimi map poster captures the contrast between the dense old town and the open ground around it. On paper the tight pattern of lanes looks like fine lace, while the highway and newer streets add firmer lines. It is a precise image of one of the valley's historic towns, a place many travellers pass without noticing.

Temple squares
Small open squares break up the tight street network. They mark the places where festivals gather and show as clear pauses in the dense texture.
Araniko Highway corridor
The main road between Kathmandu and Bhaktapur passes along the town. Its long straight line makes the older street pattern stand out clearly.
