Mahād lies in the Raigad district of Maharashtra, in the Konkan belt between the Sahyadri hills and the Arabian Sea. The town has a significant place in modern Indian history. In 1927, B. R. Ambedkar led the Mahad Satyagraha at the Chavdar Tale, asserting the right of Dalits to draw water from a public tank.
