The Daua River runs along the northern edge of the area and forms the boundary with Ethiopia. It is a thin, winding line of water and green in otherwise very dry land, and from above it is the most noticeable natural feature.
The town is laid out on flat semi-arid ground. Its streets are wide, straight and mostly unpaved, set in loose blocks of compounds and markets, and the built-up area sits close to settlements across the borders. As the headquarters of Mandera County, it is an administrative and trading centre for a large pastoral region.
