Kiya River
The river winds past the town, giving the map a flowing natural border. Its bends contrast with the straighter lines of the streets.

The map
Mariinsk Map Poster & Print
Mariinsk is in Kemerovo Oblast, also known as Kuzbass, in western Siberia. It lies on the Kiya River, and the town was originally the village of Kiyskoye before being renamed in honour of Empress Maria Alexandrovna. On a map, a mostly regular grid of streets extends back from the river over flat land.
The Trans-Siberian Railway passes through Mariinsk, and the railway line is one of the town's most prominent features on the map. Many older streets still have traditional wooden houses, which give the town part of its character. Its history also includes the grim period of the Siblag labour camp system, which was administered from here during the Soviet era.
A Mariinsk map poster shows a Siberian town that has kept much of its older structure. The grid of streets, the river bends and the long line of the railway make an ordered and balanced composition. For people who come from Mariinsk, it is an exact picture of home. For others, it is a map of a town shaped by the river and the rails.

Trans-Siberian line
The railway runs through the town as a long straight line. It connects Mariinsk to the rest of the country along one of the world's longest rail routes.
Old street grid
A largely regular grid of streets fills the flat land near the river. Many of these streets are still lined with older wooden houses.
