The map
Marsala Map Poster & Print
Marsala sits at the far western tip of Sicily, and its map is defined by the line where land meets sea. The historic centre is a compact grid inside the line of its former walls, entered through gates such as Porta Garibaldi and Porta Nuova. Newer districts spread along the coast and inland among the vineyards.
The town grew from ancient Lilybaeum, a Carthaginian stronghold later held by Rome. Its modern name comes from the Arabic Marsa Allah. Capo Boeo, just beyond the old town, is usually given as the westernmost point of Sicily. There the coastline turns sharply and the street grid runs straight into the sea.
North of the town lies the Stagnone lagoon, lined with salt pans and their windmills, and the small island of Mozia with its Phoenician remains.
