The cantonment
Straight, tree-lined roads and large open grounds give the northern cantonment a sparse, ordered look. It stands in sharp contrast to the crowded old city to the south.

The map
Meerut Map Poster & Print
Meerut lies on the level land of the Ganges–Yamuna Doab, about seventy kilometres north-east of Delhi. From above the city splits into two distinct textures: the dense, irregular lanes of the old city, and to the north the large cantonment, with its long straight roads, open grounds and generous spacing. Few Indian cities show the colonial-era split between old town and garrison as clearly.
The cantonment has a particular place in history. On 10 May 1857, sepoys stationed there rose against the East India Company, the start of the uprising many call India's First War of Independence. Today Meerut is also known for making sports goods, especially cricket equipment, which is sold across the country.
A Meerut map poster reads almost like two maps joined together. The old bazaars pack tightly around their market streets, while the cantonment's avenues and parade grounds leave wide areas of white space. Around them, newer colonies and the highways to Delhi, Haridwar and beyond spread out across farmland that stays flat in every direction.

Old city lanes
The historic core is a close web of narrow streets and market lanes. It is dense enough to appear as a solid, finely grained block at poster scale.
Roads to Delhi
Highways and a new rapid rail corridor run south-west towards the capital, drawing firm lines out of the city across the flat, fertile Doab.
