Five plazas
Plaza Independencia sits at the centre of the grid, with four smaller plazas set diagonally around it. The pattern dates from the rebuilding after 1861 and is easy to spot on the map.

The map
Mendoza Map Poster & Print
Mendoza lies in western Argentina, on a dry plain at the foot of the Andes. The high peaks, including Aconcagua, rise further to the west. The city is laid out on a regular grid of blocks, broken by wide avenues and plazas. On a map the pattern is remarkably clear, with straight streets running in every direction until the land begins to rise toward the mountains.
An earthquake destroyed much of the city in 1861, and Mendoza was rebuilt a short distance from the old centre. The new plan had wide streets and open squares meant to offer safety in future earthquakes. The central Plaza Independencia is surrounded by four smaller plazas set diagonally around it, an arrangement that stands out on any map. Irrigation channels called acequias run alongside many streets.
To the west, Parque General San Martín covers a large area with a lake, paths and a hill, Cerro de la Gloria, topped by a monument to the Army of the Andes. A Mendoza map poster shows a city planned for the desert, with water, trees and open space built into its grid. Around it lies one of the best-known wine regions in the world.

Parque General San Martín
This large park on the western edge of the city has a lake, winding paths and Cerro de la Gloria. It forms a wide green shape against the straight streets.
Acequias
Irrigation channels run beside many streets and carry water from the mountains to the trees that line the city. This small detail shapes daily life in Mendoza.
