Tanzanite hills
The nearby Merelani Hills hold the world's only commercial tanzanite deposits. Tracks from the town lead toward the mining area, which shapes much of the local geography.

The map
Merelani Map Poster & Print
Merelani lies on the dry plains between Arusha and Moshi, not far from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and its name is known well beyond Tanzania. The Merelani Hills just nearby are the only place in the world where tanzanite, a blue-violet gemstone, is mined commercially.
The map reflects that economy. The town is a loose spread of streets and plots that grew quickly around the mining area, with tracks leading out toward the hills and the mining zone. Beyond them lie open savannah and scattered homesteads, crossed by only a few longer roads.
A Merelani map poster is a portrait of a place defined by one remarkable resource. The layout is informal and practical, shaped by work instead of design, and in black and white it has a raw, unpolished quality. It suits people connected to the gem trade as much as those who call the town home.

Informal grid
Streets spread in a loose, uneven pattern that grew as the mining economy drew people in, giving the town a practical, unplanned outline.
Open plains
Around the town the land is dry, open country with few roads, so the settlement stands out clearly against the wide, empty space.
