The map
Meruoca Map Poster & Print
Meruoca is on the Serra da Meruoca, a granite massif rising from the dry backlands of northern Ceará, just above the city of Sobral. The higher ground catches more moisture than the plain around it, so the mountain forms a green, cooler island in otherwise semi-arid country.
The town itself is small and compact. It has a central square, a few principal streets and residential blocks that follow the terrain. Roads leading out of town wind across the upland between farms and patches of forest, then make a steep, zigzagging descent toward the plain.
A Meruoca map poster gives an intimate view of a mountain town in north-eastern Brazil. The small cluster of streets is surrounded by winding roads and irregular landscape, and the switchbacks on the descent add a dramatic line. It is a map about altitude as much as about streets.

Descent to Sobral
The road down from the serra to the plain twists in tight curves, a sharp graphic line where the mountain drops to the sertão.
Upland farm roads
Narrow roads wander across the plateau between smallholdings and woodland, forming a loose, organic network around the town.
