The map
Midori Map Poster & Print
Midori lies in eastern Gunma Prefecture, stretching from the plain near Kiryū into the mountains along the Watarase River. From above the city is long and narrow in its upper part: settlements follow the river valley, with the railway and roads running beside it, and forested slopes rising on both sides.
Midori is known for the Iwajuku site, where in 1946 an amateur archaeologist, Aizawa Tadahiro, found stone tools that proved Japan had a Palaeolithic period. The Watarase Keikoku Railway, a scenic line through the gorge, runs through the city towards the mountains.
A Midori map poster reflects how geography shapes settlement. In the south, streets spread across flatter land; further north they narrow into a thin band along the river. It makes for a composition with a strong sense of direction and depth.
