Minas de Marcona lies on the southern coast of Peru's Ica region, around the town and port of San Juan de Marcona. It is one of the driest landscapes in the Americas, where the coastal desert meets the Pacific. The settlement exists because of iron ore. The Marcona deposits are among the most important in Peru, and the town was built to house the workers of the mine and the port that ships the ore.
