The map
Mirny Map Poster & Print
Mirny lies in the west of the Sakha Republic, deep in the Siberian taiga on the Irelyakh River. The town was founded in the 1950s after the discovery of the Mir kimberlite pipe, one of the first major diamond deposits in the Soviet Union. Its layout still reflects that origin: a planned settlement built around the needs of the mine.
The Mir pit, right on the edge of town, is the defining feature. The former open-pit mine is roughly 1.2 kilometres across and more than 500 metres deep, its terraced walls spiralling down to the bottom. Because the ground here is permafrost, many buildings in Mirny stand on piles, and the apartment blocks are arranged in orderly microdistricts.
A Mirny map poster shows something few towns can offer: the tight concentric rings of the pit beside the rectilinear blocks of the residential streets. The river winds past, roads run off into the forest toward outlying settlements and industrial sites, and the wide empty space of the taiga surrounds everything. It is a striking, almost geometric image.

Planned microdistricts
Residential blocks built in the Soviet period are arranged in regular groups along wide streets, giving the town centre a clear, organised structure.
Irelyakh River
The small river curves past the town through the taiga, adding a soft, irregular line to a map otherwise shaped by engineering and planning.

Why Mirny
A map that means something
People who have lived or worked in Mirny, or in the diamond industry more broadly, recognise that pit instantly. As a poster it is unusual and graphic, a conversation piece that also tells the story of how a town was built on permafrost.
Add your own title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps the years you spent in the north, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download six print sizes for $9 as 300 DPI PNG and PDF, or order a printed poster.
