The map
Misilmeri Map Poster & Print
Misilmeri lies a short distance southeast of Palermo, on sloping ground above the valley of the Eleuterio river. Its name comes from the Arabic Manzil al-Amir, meaning the emir's residence. This is a reminder of the island's Arab period, and the ruins of a castle still stand on the height above the town.
The historic centre forms a compact grid of narrow streets that climbs the slope, with churches and small squares along the main thoroughfare. Newer neighbourhoods spread out below and along the roads towards Palermo, and the countryside beyond is a mix of citrus groves, olive trees and hillsides.
A Misilmeri map poster shows a town where the terrain determines the plan. The dense old core, the curving roads that climb to it and the river valley below make an intricate, layered composition. It is typical of the inland towns around Palermo.

Sloping old centre
Narrow streets climb the hillside in a tight pattern. On the map they form a dense cluster with a main street running through.
Eleuterio valley
The river runs through the lower ground near the town, bordered by cultivated land. It gives the composition a soft, winding line at its base.
