Mohammadia lies in Mascara province in northwest Algeria, on the Habra plain between the Tell hills and the coast east of Oran. Known in the colonial period as Perrégaux, it grew as an agricultural centre and a stop on the railway, and its plan shows that history: a rectilinear street grid, a rail line passing through and farmland running out in every direction.
The plain is irrigated and intensively farmed, with citrus orchards among its best-known crops.
