Nampula is the capital of Nampula Province and one of the largest cities in Mozambique. It sits well inland from the Indian Ocean on a plateau dotted with dramatic granite inselbergs. The centre follows a regular layout with wide avenues, a cathedral and administrative buildings, a legacy of the colonial-era town it grew from.
