Néa Mákri lies on the eastern coast of Attica, facing the South Euboean Gulf, just south of the plain of Marathon. On a map, the town spreads across the low ground between the hills and the sea, with a fairly regular street grid descending to a long waterfront and beach.
The town was settled in the 1920s by refugees from Makri in Asia Minor, which gave it its name. The site itself is far older: excavations have uncovered a Neolithic settlement, and at Brexiza, near the coast, lie the remains of a Roman-era sanctuary of the Egyptian gods associated with Herodes Atticus.
