Okene lies in Kogi State in central Nigeria, in a landscape of rocky hills and granite outcrops. From above, the town's roads look as if they are finding their way through the terrain rather than being laid on top of it. The town is the traditional heartland of the Ebira people and an important seat of their culture and leadership.
