Colonial grid
The centre is laid out in regular blocks of equal size. This gives the map a steady rhythm, interrupted only by squares, church grounds and the river.

The map
Orizaba Map Poster & Print
Orizaba lies in a valley in the mountains of central Veracruz, at the point where the road from the Gulf coast begins its climb towards the central plateau. The city's centre follows the regular grid of colonial Mexican towns. The Orizaba River cuts through it in a deep, winding channel, and steep hills rise close to its edges.
The city is known for its Palacio de Hierro, an iron building prefabricated in Belgium in the late nineteenth century and assembled here, often credited to Gustave Eiffel's firm. A cable car climbs the Cerro del Borrego beside the centre. On clear days the snow-capped Pico de Orizaba, Mexico's highest peak, is visible to the northwest.
An Orizaba map poster shows a dense, even grid enclosed by hills, with the river's curving line running through its middle. The mountains appear as surrounding white space. It is a precise, well-framed map that suits the city's small scale.

Orizaba River
The river runs through the city in a narrow, winding course. It is the map's most distinctive natural line, and bridges cross it frequently.
Cerro del Borrego
The hill rises steeply beside the centre and stops the grid on one side. It creates an open area that stands out against the dense streets.
