Island outline
The coastline wraps around the entire district, so the map shows a complete, closed shape of streets surrounded by water and joined to the mainland only at its northern end.

The map
Ortygia Map Poster & Print
Ortygia is the historic core of Syracuse in Sicily, an island of roughly one square kilometre separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. On a map it is a compact, slightly tapering shape. The Great Harbour lies to the west, the open Ionian Sea to the east, and only a couple of bridges link the island to the modern city.
Inside the shoreline the street pattern is dense and irregular, the result of Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Arab, Norman and Spanish layers built one on top of another. The Cathedral of Syracuse incorporates the columns of a Greek temple to Athena, and the ruins of the Temple of Apollo lie near the bridges at the island's northern end.
Castello Maniace, a thirteenth-century fortress facing the sea, stands at the southern tip. On the western shore the freshwater Fountain of Arethusa rises a few steps from salt water. An Ortygia map poster holds the whole island in one view, which few historic centres allow, with sea on almost every side of the frame.

This elongated square near the island's high point is framed by the cathedral and baroque palaces. It is one of the few wide open spaces in the tight street pattern.
Castello Maniace
The fortress fills the southern tip of Ortygia. Its square plan sits on a small headland at the entrance to the Great Harbour.

Why Ortygia
A map that means something
Ortygia is small enough to walk end to end in an afternoon, and people remember it for years. Its closed island shape makes a clean, balanced composition, and the map works as a reminder of a trip, a wedding or a summer spent in Sicily.
Write your own title and subtitle, perhaps with the dates of your stay, and keep or edit the coordinates line. Pick Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. A free 900 px preview lets you check the layout before you buy the $9 files or a printed poster.
