Oswestry sits in north-west Shropshire, only a few miles from the Welsh border, and its map shows a classic English market town. The town's name is traditionally linked to St Oswald, the Northumbrian king killed in battle in this area in the seventh century. Oswestry has always sat between England and Wales, and Offa's Dyke, the early medieval earthwork that roughly marks that boundary, runs through the hills to the west.
Just north of town, Old Oswestry hillfort appears on the map as a set of concentric ramparts, one of the best-preserved Iron Age hillforts in Britain.
