Ouahigouya is the capital of the Nord region of Burkina Faso, in the Sahel country north-west of Ouagadougou. From above, the city spreads widely across the flat plain. The city was the historic capital of the Yatenga kingdom, one of the Mossi states that ruled large parts of what is now Burkina Faso. Today it is the main administrative and market center of the north, with roads leading towards Ouagadougou, Mali and the surrounding towns.
