The map
Ovruch Map Poster & Print
Ovruch is one of the oldest towns in Ukraine. Known in the chronicles as Vruchiy, it was an important centre of the Drevlians, the East Slavic tribe of this forested region, and later a town of Kyivan Rus. Today it lies in the north of Zhytomyr Oblast, in Polissia, a landscape of pine forests, marshy lowlands and small rivers.
The town's best-known building is the Church of St Basil, first built in the twelfth century and restored in the early twentieth century by the architect Oleksiy Shchusev. The area around Ovruch is also known for pink pyrophyllite slate, quarried since the time of Kyivan Rus and used for spindle whorls found across medieval Eastern Europe.
On a map, Ovruch has a compact centre from which roads spread out to villages across the Polissian plain. The railway passes nearby, and forest presses close on several sides. An Ovruch map poster turns this old place into clean lines, where the town's age is implied rather than drawn.

Railway line
The railway runs past the town toward the north. Its long straight line cuts across the softer pattern of streets, roads and field boundaries.
Polissian forest
Large tracts of pine forest surround the town. They leave open spaces on the poster that emphasise the settled area and the roads threading through the woods.
