Dempo slopes
The volcano rises above the town. Roads climb toward it in long curves, and the settlement's shape follows the rising ground on its lower flanks.

The map
Pagar Alam Map Poster & Print
Pagar Alam is set in the highlands of South Sumatra, on the lower slopes of Mount Dempo, an active volcano and the highest peak in the province. The altitude makes it cooler than the lowlands, and the town's streets follow the valleys and ridges instead of a strict grid. On the map, roads curve around hillsides and cross small rivers flowing down from the mountain.
The slopes above the town are covered in tea plantations, which show as large, orderly areas in contrast to the scattered villages and fields below. The area is also known for its megalithic stones, carved figures and stone chambers associated with the Pasemah highlands, which have drawn archaeologists for more than a century.
A Pagar Alam map poster places a small town in a dramatic volcanic landscape. Winding roads, rivers and plantation boundaries fill the frame, with the mass of Dempo implied by the way everything bends around it. It is an unusual and very organic composition.

Tea plantations
Large estates on the upper slopes break the landscape into broad, regular areas. They stand out against the irregular fields and villages lower down.
River valleys
Streams running off the mountain cut valleys through the town area. Streets and bridges follow them, and they give the map a flowing, branching structure.
