Planned street grid
After the 1949 earthquake the town was rebuilt on a new site. Its streets follow a regular grid of blocks, which makes it the most orderly part of the map.

The map
Pelileo Map Poster & Print
Pelileo is in Ecuador's Tungurahua Province, east of Ambato. It stands on high ground above the valley of the Patate River, with the Tungurahua volcano to the southeast. The earthquake of 1949 devastated the region, and the town's current layout dates from after that disaster. Pelileo was rebuilt on a new site, so its map shows the clear, regular street grid of a planned town.
The remains of the old settlement, known as Pelileo Viejo, lie a short distance away. Together the two sites tell a story of loss and renewal. Around the town, the land drops away into deep ravines and cultivated slopes. The map therefore shows a compact grid set among irregular contours, field boundaries and winding rural roads.
Across Ecuador, Pelileo is known as the Ciudad Azul, the blue city, for its many workshops and shops that make and sell denim jeans. A Pelileo map poster shows the town behind that reputation. It captures the orderly blocks of the centre, the roads leading down into the valley, and the mountain landscape of Tungurahua all around.

Pelileo Viejo
The site of the old town, destroyed in 1949, lies nearby. Its presence on the map adds a quiet historical layer beside the rebuilt town.
Andean slopes
Beyond the grid, the land breaks into steep ravines and farmed slopes above the Patate river valley. Winding roads trace the terrain across them.
