Lakeshore centre
The town centre meets the water of Pieksänjärvi, so one side of the core is defined by shoreline rather than streets, a clean edge on the printed map.

The map
Pieksämäki Map Poster & Print
Pieksämäki lies in South Savo, in the lake country of eastern Finland, and its map is organised around two things: water and rails. The town centre sits on the shore of Lake Pieksänjärvi, and beyond it the landscape breaks into further lakes, narrow bays and forested ground, so the built-up area has an irregular edge that follows shorelines rather than surveyors' lines.
The town is best known as a railway junction where lines from several directions meet, and that role is plain from above. Long, gently curving tracks run through and out of town, and the station area forms a clear hub. Residential streets fill the spaces between, with detached houses and tree-lined blocks typical of Finnish towns of this size.
On a Pieksämäki map poster the lakes become broad, open shapes, and the railway lines give the composition a strong directional pull. The result is less a dense street pattern than a balance of open water, gaps of forest and the purposeful lines of infrastructure that made the town what it is.

Converging railway lines
Several rail lines approach from different directions and meet at the station, drawing long curves across the map that anchor the whole composition.
Lake-country surroundings
Outside the centre, further lakes and bays cut into the land, leaving roads to find their way between water and forest in a pattern typical of Savo.
