The map
Piranhas Map Poster & Print
Piranhas lies in the sertão of Alagoas on the northern bank of the São Francisco River, close to the border with Sergipe. On a map the historic centre follows the curve of the river, with short, steep streets climbing the hillside above it. Newer districts spread across higher ground away from the water.
The old town, with its colourful nineteenth-century houses and old railway station, is protected as national heritage. Piranhas is also linked to the story of Lampião and his band of cangaceiros, killed in 1938 on the opposite bank. Nearby is the Xingó dam, whose reservoir fills the canyon upstream.
A Piranhas map poster captures a small town shaped by a great river. The São Francisco dominates the frame as a wide band of water bending between rocky banks, and the old centre sits tight against it. Roads leave the valley in curving lines, and the canyon landscape adds drama to a modest urban footprint.

Historic hillside
The protected old town climbs the slope above the water in short, stepped streets, a compact and irregular pattern that stands out clearly.
Xingó canyon
Upstream, the reservoir of the Xingó dam fills a steep canyon. A wider framing can include this dramatic stretch of water.

Why Piranhas
A map that means something
Piranhas draws visitors to the São Francisco canyons and the history of the sertão, and its residents take pride in it. The map shows the river town as a whole, water and hillside together.
You can add a personal title, a travel date or a family name, and edit the coordinates line. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Sand suits the warm stone of the riverbanks.
