Hill and valley streets
The town is spread across uneven high ground, so its streets curve and switch direction repeatedly, creating a lively, irregular pattern.

The map
Pirmasens Map Poster & Print
Pirmasens stands on high ground at the western edge of the Palatinate Forest in Rhineland-Palatinate. On a map, the streets never quite settle into a regular pattern. They climb over ridges, bend down into valleys and wrap around steep slopes, so the city looks as if it has been draped over the land. Forest surrounds it on several sides and gives the town a clear edge.
In the eighteenth century, Landgrave Ludwig IX of Hesse-Darmstadt made Pirmasens a garrison town, and it grew around his soldiers. Later it became known as the centre of German shoemaking, an industry that shaped its factories and working neighbourhoods. The old industrial buildings are still woven into the street layout.
A Pirmasens map poster captures a town shaped by its topography. The curving roads, stepped neighbourhoods and green margins of the forest come through strongly in black and white. It is a map with a lot of movement in it, reflecting how the town clings to its uneven ground.
