The map
Pohnpei Map Poster & Print
Pohnpei is the largest and most populous island of the Federated States of Micronesia and home to the national capital, Palikir, in the island's northwest. The nearby town of Kolonia, close to the northern coast, is the main commercial centre. The island is roughly circular and rises steeply to a forested volcanic interior. It is known as one of the wettest inhabited places on earth.
Its map is a series of concentric rings. The mountainous core gives way to river valleys and a coastal road, then a fringe of mangroves, then a broad lagoon scattered with small islets. Off the eastern shore, beside Temwen Island, lies Nan Madol, a complex of nearly a hundred artificial islets built on the reef flat from stacked basalt columns. Its pattern of small islands and canals is one of the most extraordinary shapes in the Pacific.
