The Palais de Justice, once the palace of the Counts of Poitou and Dukes of Aquitaine, is close by at the heart of the plateau.
Poitiers gave its name to two famous battles, including the one fought nearby in 732, and its university, founded in 1431, is one of the oldest in France.
