Ranst lies just east of Antwerp in the province of the same name. It is not a single town but a group of villages: Ranst itself, Broechem, Emblem and Oelegem. On a map they appear as separate clusters of streets, each with its own centre, connected by country roads across a green and fairly flat landscape.
Major motorways cross the municipality, and their large interchange is one of the most recognisable shapes in the area. The broad curves of the ramps stand out sharply against the smaller village lanes.
