Mountain valley
The town sits on a valley floor surrounded by ridges of the western Altai, so its outline is determined by the mountains around it.

The map
Ridder Map Poster & Print
Ridder lies in the far east of Kazakhstan, in a valley of the western Altai near the Russian border. From above, the town fills the valley floor, and the land rises on every side into steep, wooded slopes. The upper Ulba and its tributaries wind through the area and set the direction of the main roads.
The town is named after Philipp Ridder, the mining engineer who found ore deposits here in the late eighteenth century, and mining has shaped it ever since. For much of the Soviet period it was called Leninogorsk. Its industrial areas sit close to the residential districts.
A Ridder map poster shows a compact, mostly regular street network enclosed by open, rising terrain. There are few roads beyond the town, which highlights how isolated and mountainous the setting is. The effect is quiet and dense in the centre, and almost empty toward the edges.

Ulba headwaters
Streams of the upper Ulba River run near the town, drawing thin, curving lines that guide the roads down the valley.
Mining districts
Industrial sites linked to more than two centuries of ore mining sit close to the housing blocks and form large, simple shapes on the map.

Why Ridder
A map that means something
Ridder people who have moved to Ust-Kamenogorsk, Almaty or abroad often remember the mountains more than anything else. A map of the valley brings that memory into a room.
Write the title in Kazakh, Russian or English, add a year or a name in the subtitle, and choose one of five styles, such as Paper or Blueprint. The $9 download includes 300 DPI PNGs and print-ready PDFs, and printed posters are also available.
