River confluence
The Ounasjoki and Kemijoki meet beside the city centre. They create the broad water shapes that define the whole composition.

The map
Rovaniemi Map Poster & Print
Rovaniemi lies where the Ounasjoki joins the Kemijoki, just south of the Arctic Circle in Finnish Lapland. From above, the two broad rivers dominate the scene. They meet beside the city centre, and the wooded hill of Ounasvaara rises steeply on the eastern bank. Bridges tie the districts together across the water.
The city was almost completely destroyed in 1944 during the Lapland War. Alvar Aalto drew up the reconstruction plan, and its main roads were arranged so that, seen from above, they trace the shape of a reindeer's head and antlers. The Arktikum science centre sits on the river bank. Santa Claus Village, on the Arctic Circle to the north, draws visitors from around the world.
A Rovaniemi map poster shows all of that at once. There is the confluence of the two rivers, the reindeer-shaped plan in the centre and the flowing Jätkänkynttilä bridge. Ounasvaara's slopes stand on one side and the forest spreads out on all sides. Few cities make such a clear shape from above, which makes it a natural subject for a map.

Reindeer plan
Alvar Aalto's postwar street plan traces a reindeer's head and antlers. It is one of the most distinctive urban layouts in Northern Europe.
Lumberjack's Candle Bridge
The Jätkänkynttilä bridge carries the main road over the Kemijoki. It forms a clear link between the centre and the western districts.

Why Rovaniemi
A map that means something
Rovaniemi is where many people saw the northern lights for the first time or spent a winter on exchange. For others it is simply home at the top of Finland. A map of the rivers and reindeer plan keeps that northern memory close.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the date of a trip or the line of the Arctic Circle. Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, as a $9 download or as a matte print.
