The map
Sanjō Map Poster & Print
Sanjō is in central Niigata prefecture, on the broad Echigo Plain. The Shinano River, the longest river in Japan, runs along the western side of the city, and the Igarashi River flows in from the east to join it near the centre. From above the two rivers frame the town like a letter Y.
Sanjō and neighbouring Tsubame together form one of the best-known metalworking regions in Japan. Their workshops produce knives, carpentry tools, cutlery and kitchenware, a tradition that goes back centuries. The Tsubame-Sanjō station on the Joetsu Shinkansen sits between the two cities.
Outside the centre, rice fields cover much of the plain and are divided into neat rectangles. Houses and small factories are spread along the roads. A Sanjō map poster shows rivers meeting on a flat plain, dense streets near the confluence, and a regular farmland pattern all around.

Shinano River
Japan's longest river runs wide along the western side of the city. Its embankments and bridges add strong lines to the frame.
Rice field grid
Neat rectangular paddies cover the plain around the city. They give the poster an even texture, broken by roads and small settlements.
