The Sha River
The river winds through the valley and holds the city together. Nearly every street runs parallel to it or crosses it by one of several bridges.

The map
Sanming Map Poster & Print
Sanming lies in the mountainous interior of Fujian Province, in southeastern China. The main urban area occupies a narrow valley along the Sha River, and the terrain leaves little room for expansion. As a result the city stretches along the water in a long, winding shape, with buildings pressed between the river and steep, wooded slopes on either side.
The city developed largely as an industrial centre in the second half of the twentieth century. Its wider administrative area is known for forested mountains and for Taining, whose red sandstone landscape is part of the China Danxia UNESCO World Heritage Site. That upland character is visible even within the city, where the hills set firm limits on the streets.
A Sanming map poster follows the river as the organising line of the whole composition. Bridges link the two banks at intervals, roads trace the valley floor, and streets end abruptly where the slopes begin. The effect is of a city drawn along a single thread of water, surrounded by blank space that stands for the hills.

Valley shape
Steep, forested slopes confine the built-up area to a narrow strip, giving the map a long, sinuous outline instead of a compact centre.
Hillside edges
Streets stop where the mountains begin, leaving large open areas around the city that give the poster a calm, spacious frame.
