Oasis edge
Streets and fields stop where irrigation ends, so the map shows a clear boundary between the dense settled area and the empty desert beyond it.

The map
Saybag Map Poster & Print
Saybag lies in the Hotan area of southern Xinjiang, on the edge of the Taklamakan Desert, with the Kunlun Mountains rising far to the south. From above, the oasis is defined by water: settlements and fields cluster where meltwater rivers and irrigation canals reach, and beyond them the land turns quickly to bare sand and gravel.
The Hotan oasis has been inhabited for a very long time, and this region was a stop on the southern branches of the old Silk Road routes. Today the settled land around Saybag shows a close pattern of streets, tree-lined roads, orchards and field plots, bounded on the outside by the pale emptiness of the desert.
A Saybag map poster shows how sharply cultivated land meets desert in this part of the world. Dense clusters of streets and canals fill the oasis, while wide areas of open space surround them. The contrast between the fine web of the irrigated zone and the blank desert gives the image a striking, minimal quality.

Irrigation canals
Canals fed by rivers from the Kunlun Mountains cross the oasis in long lines, organising fields and roads into a quiet, repeating pattern on the page.
Tree-lined roads
Roads through the oasis run in straight or gently curving lines between fields and villages, giving the settled area a network that fades at the desert margin.
