Compact town core
The streets of the centre form a small, tight cluster. In black and white it reads as a single mark set in a wide sertão landscape.

The map
Serrita Map Poster & Print
Serrita is in the sertão of Pernambuco, in a semi-arid landscape of caatinga scrub, low ridges and seasonal rivers. On a map the town is a small, compact cluster. Around it, the roads and tracks that connect it to scattered rural settlements and grazing land stand out clearly against a lot of open ground.
Serrita is best known for the Missa do Vaqueiro, the cowboys' mass held each year in honour of the vaqueiro Raimundo Jacó. It has become one of the best-known cultural events of the northeastern backlands. Riders in leather gear gather for an open-air celebration that ties the town to the region's cattle-herding tradition.
A Serrita map poster shows the town as it sits in this dry country. There is a small, dense core and a web of lines spreading into the backlands. Dry riverbeds and low hills leave faint marks, and the empty space around the streets says as much about the place as the streets do.

Backland tracks
Unpaved roads leave the town in several directions, heading to farms and hamlets. They draw a loose, branching pattern across the caatinga.
Seasonal watercourses
Intermittent streams cross the surrounding land and appear as faint, winding lines. They are a reminder of how much the region depends on the rainy season.
