The map
Shibukawa Map Poster & Print
Shibukawa lies in central Gunma, where the Tone and Agatsuma rivers meet, between the volcanic peaks of Haruna and Akagi. From above, the city is a web of river valleys and slopes. The main town spreads over the lower ground near the rivers, while roads climb west toward the Haruna foothills and east across the Tone.
The city includes Ikaho Onsen, a well-known hot spring resort famous for the long flight of stone steps, lined with inns and shops, that climbs through its centre. Shibukawa also calls itself the navel of Japan, claiming a spot near the country's geographic centre, and celebrates this with a summer navel festival.
A Shibukawa map poster brings out the landscape as much as the town. The rivers carve broad lines through the design, the valley roads follow their banks, and Ikaho's smaller street pattern sits on the slope above. The effect is layered and almost three-dimensional, even in a flat print.

Ikaho stone steps
Ikaho's central stairway climbs straight through the hot spring town. It is a short but distinctive line, surrounded by closely packed inns on the hillside.
Haruna foothills
West of the city, roads wind up toward Mount Haruna. Their switchbacks and curves reflect the steep volcanic terrain above the valley.
