The map
Shillong Map Poster & Print
Shillong is the capital of Meghalaya, on the Shillong Plateau in the Khasi Hills at around 1,500 metres. The terrain is uneven, and on a map the city shows it clearly: roads bend and double back to follow the ridges, neighbourhoods fill the valleys, and there are very few straight lines anywhere.
The British developed the town as a hill station and administrative centre, and it was capital of the undivided Assam province for many years. Its cool climate, pine forests and rolling hills earned it the nickname Scotland of the East. Ward's Lake is a small landscaped lake near the centre. The much larger Umiam Lake lies to the north on the road to Guwahati.

The highest point in the area rises south of the city. Its slopes limit growth in that direction and give the southern edge of the map a natural boundary.
