The map
Shimabara Map Poster & Print
Shimabara lies on the eastern coast of the Shimabara Peninsula in Nagasaki Prefecture, between the Ariake Sea and the slopes of Mount Unzen. On the map, the town runs in a long strip along the shore, with the castle grounds and old samurai district in the centre and streets rising gently inland toward the volcano.
The castle dates from the early seventeenth century, and in 1637 the region was the scene of the Shimabara Rebellion. In 1792 the collapse of Mount Mayuyama sent a landslide into the sea and caused a deadly tsunami. More recently, the eruption of Fugendake in 1991 created the Heisei Shinzan lava dome. The town is also known for spring water and for carp swimming in its street channels.
A Shimabara map poster shows a town caught between the mountain and the sea. The long coastline, the square moat around the castle, the regular lanes of the samurai quarter and the roads climbing toward Unzen all appear in one frame, a small town with a big landscape behind it.

Why Shimabara
A map that means something
Shimabara is a place people remember: the castle, the water in the streets, the mountain always in view. A map of it makes a strong print for those who have lived there or visited, and it pairs well with other Kyushu places.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the name in Japanese or a travel date, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The $9 digital files come in six sizes, or order a framed print shipped from a partner in Japan.
