The map
Shizuoka Map Poster & Print
Shizuoka sits on a narrow coastal plain between the mountains of central Japan and Suruga Bay. From above, Sunpu Castle Park anchors the centre, and its square moats are one of the clearest shapes on the map. Streets spread out from the park in a regular grid, bounded on the west by the wide, braided bed of the Abe River.
Tokugawa Ieyasu, founder of the Tokugawa shogunate, spent his final years at Sunpu after handing power to his son, and the castle town grew around him. Today Shizuoka is the prefectural capital and lies at the heart of one of Japan's best-known green tea regions, with tea fields covering the surrounding hills. On clear days Mount Fuji is visible to the northeast.
In 2003 the city merged with the port town of Shimizu, so it now reaches across to the harbour and the Miho peninsula on the bay. A Shizuoka map poster captures the central plain between river and hills. The castle moats, the rail line and the tight urban grid are framed by open slopes and the curve of the coast.

Abe River
The river flows down from the mountains along the city's western side. Its broad, braided channel forms a soft, pale band beside the grid.
Tea hills
Hills covered in tea fields rise around the plain. In wider framings, their slopes and winding hillside roads surround the city with a looser texture.

Why Shizuoka
A map that means something
Shizuoka is a quiet, liveable city, and for those who grew up or studied here it is closely tied to tea, the castle park and views of Fuji. A map of the central plain is a restrained reminder of that everyday landscape.
