Shrewsbury Map Poster & Print
Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, close to the Welsh border. Its map is instantly recognisable: the River Severn makes a tight horseshoe loop around the town centre, leaving only a narrow gap to the north, where the castle stands. The old town sits on a hill inside that loop.
Inside the loop, streets are medieval in layout, winding and uneven, connected by the narrow passages known locally as shuts. The English Bridge and the Welsh Bridge cross the river on opposite sides of the loop, and the Quarry, a large riverside park, fills the southwestern bend.
Charles Darwin was born in Shrewsbury in 1809 and went to school there. The town also has a notably large number of timber-framed buildings. A Shrewsbury map poster shows a place whose shape was decided by a river more than a thousand years ago.

Castle neck
At the narrow gap where the loop almost closes, the castle and railway station occupy the only land entrance to the old town.
The Quarry
A large park lies along the inside of the river bend, an open green space next to the tight medieval streets.
