The map
Siegen Map Poster & Print
Siegen occupies a series of valleys in the hills of the Siegerland, in the southeast of North Rhine-Westphalia. The Sieg River runs through the city centre, and side valleys branch off in several directions, so the built area spreads in a star-like pattern with wooded ridges in between.
The old town sits on a hill above the river, crowned by the Upper Castle, while the Lower Castle stands closer to the centre. Streets on the slopes curve and wind, some climbing steeply, and the university campuses occupy separate sites on the heights, visible on the map as distinct clusters.
Siegen is the birthplace of the painter Peter Paul Rubens, and its long history of iron mining and metalworking shaped the surrounding region. A Siegen map poster shows a city that fits its terrain closely, with valleys full and hilltops mostly left to the forest.

Old town hill
The historic core climbs a hill above the river, with winding streets leading up toward the Upper Castle at the top.
Wooded ridges
Forested hills separate the neighbourhoods, so the city appears as several connected fingers of streets rather than a single mass.
