Old Town and walls
The compact knot of streets around the Old Town Market Square, with the curved line of the reconstructed city walls and Barbican, sits at the northern end of the district near the river.

The map
Śródmieście Map Poster & Print
Śródmieście is Warsaw's central district, and its map is one of the most layered in Europe. The Vistula runs along its eastern edge beneath a long escarpment, and the Royal Route traces a line south from the Old Town through Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat. West of it, wide post-war avenues such as Marszałkowska and Aleje Jerozolimskie form a broader, more monumental grid.
Most of the district was destroyed in 1944, and the Old Town that stands today is a careful post-war reconstruction, recognised by UNESCO. The Palace of Culture and Science rises from a vast square near the central station, a Soviet-era gift that still dominates the skyline. To the south, Łazienki park and palace add large green spaces to the plan.
A Śródmieście map poster brings together the curved medieval lanes of the Old Town, the long straight axis of the Royal Route and the wide squares of the twentieth century. Few city centres show their history this clearly in plan form, and in black and white the contrasts become the whole composition.

Royal Route
A single long axis runs from Castle Square south along Krakowskie Przedmieście and Nowy Świat toward Łazienki, the historic ceremonial road linking royal residences.
Parade Square
The huge open space around the Palace of Culture and Science forms a striking empty block on the map, framed by Marszałkowska and Aleje Jerozolimskie.
