Great Colonnade
The main colonnaded street of ancient Palmyra runs as a long, slightly bent axis through the ruins, a line that still organises the whole archaeological site from above.

The map
Tadmur Map Poster & Print
Tadmur stands far out in the Syrian Desert, northeast of Damascus, and its existence has always depended on water. The Efqa spring and the palm and olive gardens it feeds form a dense green belt beside the town, the only large area of cultivated ground for a long way in any direction. Around it, the map is almost empty steppe.
Beside the modern town lie the ruins of Palmyra, the ancient city that flourished as a caravan stop on trade routes linking the Roman world with Persia, India and China. On a map the archaeological site has its own geometry: the long line of the Great Colonnade, the precinct of the Temple of Bel, and tower tombs scattered in the valley to the west.
Parts of the site were deliberately destroyed during the conflict between 2015 and 2017, including the Temple of Bel, which makes its outline on paper all the more meaningful. A Tadmur map poster places the modern streets, the ancient city and the castle on its hill in one frame, a record of a place that has endured for millennia.

Oasis gardens
Palm and olive groves fed by the spring spread beside the town in a dense, irregular patchwork, a striking contrast with the open desert surrounding everything else.
Castle hill
The medieval castle crowns a hill northwest of the ruins, and the road winding up to it gives the map a clear high point above the plain.
