Paddy-field grid
Around the town, rice fields form a precise grid of small rectangles. On the poster they read as a delicate, even pattern that fills the lowland around the streets.

The map
Tainai Map Poster & Print
Tainai spreads across the northern part of the Niigata plain, one of Japan's great rice-growing areas. On the map, flat paddy land fills most of the lowland, divided into precise rectangles, with the town centre forming a denser cluster along the rail line and main roads. Rivers run from the mountains west toward the Sea of Japan.
The city in its present form was created in 2005 by merging the towns of Nakajo and Kurokawa. Its territory extends well inland, rising into the forested Iide range, so the map moves from dense town streets to open farmland and then to steep, empty uplands with valley roads.
A Tainai map poster makes the most of that range. The rice-field grid gives the lowland a fine, regular texture, the rivers add long curving lines, and the town centre sits within them as a compact knot of streets.

Rivers to the sea
Rivers flow out of the mountains and across the plain toward the Sea of Japan. Their curving courses break up the straight field lines and guide the eye across the map.
Town centre cluster
The main built-up area gathers along the railway and main roads. It forms a denser knot of streets, distinct from the surrounding farmland.
