The Irtysh bend
A wide, winding stretch of the Irtysh passes the town, with sandbanks and backwaters that draw soft, irregular shapes next to the straight streets.

The map
Tara Map Poster & Print
Tara stands on the left bank of the Irtysh in the north of Omsk Oblast, close to where the Tara river flows in. From above, the wide Irtysh dominates the picture: a broad curve of water with sandbars, side channels and floodplain meadows. The town sits on the higher ground above it, its streets set out in a clear, mostly rectangular pattern.
Founded in 1594, Tara is one of the earliest Russian towns in Siberia. It began as a fortress guarding the route along the Irtysh, and the orderly street plan still recalls that planned origin. Beyond the town, the map fades into forest and marshy lowland, the start of the taiga that stretches north across western Siberia.
A Tara map poster captures the relationship between the river and the town. The fine grid of streets holds to the terrace, while the Irtysh loops across the sheet with all its channels and islands. In black and white, the contrast between the regular town and the irregular floodplain is especially strong.

Regular old grid
Tara's streets form a fairly even rectangular grid, a legacy of its planned beginnings as a fortified settlement on the Siberian frontier.
Floodplain and taiga
Low meadows, lakes and forest surround the town, so the built-up area appears as a compact block on a wide, open northern landscape.
