Tirur lies in Malappuram district in northern Kerala, a few kilometres inland from the Arabian Sea. The Tirur River winds nearby on its way toward the coast.
The town is closely associated with Thunchath Ezhuthachan, regarded as the father of modern Malayalam, whose birthplace at Thunchan Parambu is nearby. Tirur is also known for its betel leaf, which carries a geographical indication. The railway line along the coast passes through the town and forms one of the few straight lines on its map.
