Castle and convent
The Templar castle walls enclose a large area on the hill west of town, including the Convent of Christ. They form a bold, irregular outline above the streets.

The map
Tomar Map Poster & Print
Tomar sits on both banks of the River Nabão in central Portugal. The old town lies on the west bank in a neat grid of streets, and above it a wooded hill carries the walls of the castle founded by the Knights Templar in the twelfth century. Within those walls stands the Convent of Christ, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the middle of the river, the island of Mouchão is a small park shaded by trees, and several bridges link the two sides of town. Every few years the streets fill for the Festa dos Tabuleiros, a festival in which women carry tall trays of bread on their heads in procession.
A Tomar map poster shows a very clear composition: a straight-lined lower town, a river with its island, and a large walled enclosure on the hill. The castle's outline is one of the strongest shapes on any Portuguese town map, and the river makes a gentle curve through the centre of the frame.

Mouchão island
A small island park divides the Nabão in the town centre. On the map it shows as a leaf-shaped form between the bridges.
Lower town grid
The historic centre between the river and the hill follows a regular street plan. Its main axis leads towards the castle.

Why Tomar
A map that means something
Tomar leaves a lasting impression, whether from a day spent in the Convent of Christ, a visit during the festival or growing up by the Nabão. This map records that combination of river, grid and hilltop walls.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with the date of a visit or a wedding. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper and Sand suit the town's warm stone well.
