Tuzantla lies in the warm lowlands of eastern Michoacán, close to the border with the State of Mexico. From above, the town is a compact knot of blocks set among folded hills and valley floors. The name is usually traced to Nahuatl and read as a place of gophers, a common way of naming a place after its landscape in central Mexico.
